Crisis Management Policy for Dealing with Death and Other Traumatic Events Affecting our School Community
The school system will develop plans and procedures to cope with incidents involving death or other traumatic events that directly affect our students. Such plans will include:
1. The annual formation of site-based crisis teams including a representative from the central office.
2. Specific written procedures to follow in the event of such incidents.
Crisis Team
Annual procedures—to be completed by the first week of school
1. Crisis team members identified by building principal and a list of their names distributed to the staff at the beginning of the school year.
2. Contact with the police department to develop a communication procedure so the schools can be informed by the South Hadley Police Department when any South Hadley student is involved in a traumatic event or death.
3. Training of crisis team members if necessary.
4. Develop a roster of all bus students and their specific bus assignments.
5. Review of safety procedures with each building principal to deal with natural disasters, e.g., tornados, gas leaks, fires.
6. Review and update list of the school’s educational resources - books, films, and other curriculum materials dealing with death, loss and other tragedies.
