**JLCEA-R - AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS** **Last Updated Date:** 05/27/2014 **Adoption Date:** 04/08/2008 The “Chain of Survival” is the four-step procedure that is to be followed for any incident that requires an ambulance, including a heart attack and cardiac arrest.  The “Chain of Survival” includes:       1.   Early notification of the EMS system by dialing 911.       2.   Early intervention of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) by a South Hadley Public Schools employee, bystander or South Hadley First Responder.       3.   Early defibrillation by a trained AED provider.       4.   Early arrival of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Paramedic/Ambulance South Hadley Public Schools has embarked upon a program of training staff in CPR and AED use.  By providing this training the district hopes to increase early recognition of a heart attack or another medical emergency and to take action immediately by summoning advanced medical care as soon as it is warranted.  In addition, through CPR training, South Hadley Public Schools hopes to initiate CPR at the very onset of a cardiac arrest, providing the person the best chance of support until the arrival of a defibrillator and South Hadley emergency service providers. Defibrillator Location Each facility will assure that the defibrillator assigned is accessible and in a secure location.  The following locations have been designated as accessible AED sites.  Therefore, the Cardiac Science Powerheart G3 Plus AEDs will be placed in the four South Hadley Public Schools in the stated locations as follows: Plains Elementary School       1.   One located on the wall outside the gymnasium door       2.   One located in the hallway outside the cafeteria Mosier Elementary School       1.   One located in the main hallway on the left wall past the library and nurse’s office       2.   One located in the back main corridor located across from the girls’ restroom Michael E. Smith Middle School       1.   One located outside the gymnasium       2.   One located in the hallway on the wall next to room 108       3.   One located in the upstairs hallway on the wall outside room 238 South Hadley High School       1.   One located outside the auditorium in the main hallway       2.   One located across from the gymnasium on Cafeteria #1 wall  South Hadley High School, continued       3.   One in the back hallway outside room 515       4.   AED #4 will travel with the trainer onto the fields for home sporting events. Responsibility for Operation and Placement of AEDs 1.   Upon the facility manager/school nurse/school trainer’s arrival at work, he/she will check the defibrillator(s) in the building on a daily basis.  It will be that facility manager/school nurse/school trainer’s responsibility to verify that the unit is in the proper location with a green light indicating that it is ready for use.  Once a month he/she will ensure that it has all of the appropriate equipment (battery, mask, case, emergency pack inside) and that it is ready for use. 2.   The Cardiac Science G3 Plus AED will perform its own diagnostic evaluation **daily**.  If the defibrillator has identified a problem, a **red light** will appear in the window of the unit indicating an abnormality.  An alarm will sound as well.       If the **red light** in the window of the defibrillator is lit, the defibrillator is experiencing some type of malfunction and should not be used.  If the red light is on and the alarm is sounding, the problem should be immediately reported to the South Hadley Fire Emergency Services Liaison or her/his designee, or the South Hadley Public Schools AED Nurse Liaison. 3.   After completing the monthly inspection of the AED, the Facility Manager shall make note in an **AED log** indicating that the unit has been inspected and that it was found to be **Ín-Service” or “Out-of-Service”**.  That person must sign his/her name, and shall be responsible for following up to ensure the AED is serviced and returned to its designated space. 4.   The Facility Manager shall be responsible for the following:       a.   The daily AED service check (see #1 above)       b.   The monthly service checks utilizing the AED Checklist       c.   The prompt replacement of equipment and supplies       d.   The repair and service of the AEDs and related equipment       e.   All record keeping for the equipment during the year       f.    Training Records - CPR/AED - Scheduling Periodic Skills Evaluation - A list of predetermined and properly certified AED Providers       g.   Incident record keeping 5.   The South Hadley Fire District 1 Liaison or her/his designee shall be responsible for:       a.   Providing/scheduling opportunities for CPR and AED training recertification for all Predetermined AED Providers.       b.   Assisting South Hadley Public Schools, in a coordinated effort with the South Hadley Public Schools AED Nurse Liaison, with obtaining the proper AED/CPR training of any interested South Hadley Public Schools employees, implementing policy and procedures, and assisting as needed in procedural evaluation after a cardiac arrest.       c.   Providing the memorandum of agreement with designated agencies and policies and procedures, which are included.
