**JICE - STUDENT PUBLICATIONS** **Last Updated Date:** 05/27/2014 **Adoption Date:** 01/10/2006 School Publications School newspapers, yearbooks, literary magazines and other publications make a significant contribution to the educational program of the school. Each student publication shall be free to serve as a forum of student opinion and to deal with controversial issues so long as they meet the usual standards of responsible journalism by avoiding that which is false, libelous, or which advocates discrimination or racial prejudice. It is recognized that school publications serve a major function in disseminating information within the school with considerable potential for contributing to the general morale and unity of the school community. Publications will keep in mind the age and maturity of the students they serve. Official school publications will, in each case, require the supervision of a faculty advisor who serves under the authority of the school principal. Other Printed Matters Non-school groups wishing to distribute handbills, or other printed matter, must submit their requests for approval to the superintendent in advance.  The superintendent will determine whether the printed matter meets the established regulations as to acceptable materials and the time and place to be distributed. Each student publication shall contain the following: “Pursuant to state law, no expression made by students in the exercise of such rights shall be deemed to be an expression of school policy and no school officials shall be held responsible in any civil or criminal action for any expression made or published by the students.” **Policy References:** LEGAL REFS.: M.G.L. 71:82; 71:86
