**IKB - HOMEWORK** **Last Updated Date:** 04/29/2014 **Adoption Date:** 01/10/2006 The School Committee supports homework that is properly designed, carefully planned and appropriate to the development of the individual student. Homework must meet a real need and have a definite place in the educational program. It is assigned to help the student become more self-reliant; learn independence, improve skills that have been taught, and allow completion of certain worthwhile projects such as the reading of books and the preparation of research papers. Homework also affords a way for parents to become acquainted with the schools’ programs and their child’s educational progress. All homework assignments shall be for sound educational purposes. The following guidelines should be used in assigning homework for students: 1.   Homework should be regularly assigned so that students will come to see it as a part of their school routine. 2.   Homework assignments should be clearly stated. The teacher has a responsibility to make sure the students understand what is expected and when it is expected. 3.   Homework should be regularly collected, promptly assessed, and promptly returned. By adhering to a schedule of regular collection, the teacher develops a sense of routine in the students. Through prompt assessment the teacher gives the student constructive feedback that will improve the student’s opportunity for future success. Prompt return of homework keeps the lesson and its objectives fresh in the mind of the teacher and the students. 4.   Homework should normally be of one or more of the following types:       •        Preparation       •        Practice       •        Extension       •        Creativity 5.   Homework shall not be assigned for the purpose of punishment. 6.   Parents are expected to provide their son or daughter with the opportunity, appropriate space, and time to do homework. Parents and students, unless a hardship condition exists, are expected to make use of public libraries and public resources in the completion of certain homework requirements. 7.   Parents are expected to communicate with their son’s or daughter’s teacher (or principal) if difficulties arise in meeting homework requirements. 8.   The allotment of time for homework should correspond to the stated practice of the individual school and grade level. 9.   When applicable, homework assignments should be differentiated to meet the need of individuals. 10. Homework content and quantity should be consistent within each grade level. **Policy References:** LEGAL REFS.: Student Handbooks
