**IJ - INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS SELECTION PROCEDURES** **Last Updated Date:** 04/29/2014 **Adoption Date:** 01/10/2006 Responsibility for the selection of instructional materials rests with the professional staff. Selection of materials will be accomplished cooperatively by teachers, directors, librarians, media specialists and students at the secondary level in the following manner: a)         The librarian shall periodically request teachers to make suggestions for library/media center acquisitions. In addition, the librarian shall publicize the fact that suggestions for acquisitions may be made throughout the year. b)         The librarian and the media specialist should consult curriculum guides and new course descriptions in order to keep the collection up to date. c)         The library media center shall also provide forms for students to make suggestions for purchase and publicize the fact that students may make such suggestions.  Students shall be surveyed concerning their interests in magazines and newspapers for the library media center. d)         Whenever possible non-print materials will be previewed by students, teachers, librarians, and media specialists before purchase. e)         It is suggested that whenever appropriate, materials which have been used in the individual courses be evaluated by students and teachers as a guide to further selection. f)         All requisitions must have the approval of the principal, and appropriately the director, the librarian or the media specialists. In all cases materials (both print and non-print) purchased will be selected according to the following criteria: a)         The representation of various points of view on controversial subjects in the curriculum. b)         The relationship of the materials to the goals and objectives of the curriculum and/or the interests of the students for whom they are intended. c)         The quality and accuracy of materials available. d)         The ability of the materials to implement the philosophy of the school, the various departments, and the philosophy stated in the clarification of this document. e)         Reviewing media such as the following: - _Booklist_ - _Science Books and Films_ - _Paperback Book Guide_ - _New York Times Book Review_ Standard selection tools of the various disciplines such as Books for You, produced by the National Council of Teachers of English. **Policy References:** LEGAL REFS.: M.G.L. 71:48; 71:49; 71:50
