**BIB - SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEMBER DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES**
**Last Updated Date:** 11/26/2013
**Adoption Date:** 01/10/2006
School Committee members are encouraged to engage in activities which will broaden their vision and knowledge of education and increase their competence as they function on a meeting-by-meeting basis on the Committee.
"In-service education" for School Committee members takes many forms: membership in local, state and national School Committee and school board associations; attendance and participation at clinics, workshops, conferences and conventions; reading of newsletters, periodicals and books about education and School Committee operations; and visiting schools with exemplary programs.
Inasmuch as School Committee members serve without pay, it is in the public interest for them to be reimbursed for the cost of activities which enable them to perform their official duties more effectively.
The School Committee should establish guidelines and procedures for reimbursement of members for items such as: books, subscriptions, transportation, meals, lodging, membership fees and conference costs.
