**BEB - SPECIAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETINGS** **Last Updated Date:** 11/26/2013 **Adoption Date:** 01/10/2006 Special meetings of the South Hadley School Committee may be called by the chairperson of the School Committee, the superintendent or on written request of any three (3) members of the School Committee. Unless the special meeting is an emergency meeting, the superintendent shall give notice of the special meeting to all members of the School Committee at least forty‑eight (48) hours prior to the meeting in addition to following the legal requirement for public notice. The superintendent will notify School Committee members by phone or by mail in advance of the time and place of the special meeting. (If any member of the School Committee is not properly notified about a special meeting, the legality of any action taken could be subject to challenge.) The agenda for special meetings is restricted to only such business that appears in the call of the meeting, unless words such as the following are included in the call: "and other business as may properly come before it." The law provides that if a special meeting is called because of an emergency, public notice need not be given. "Emergency" is defined as "a sudden, general unexpected occurrence or set of circumstances demanding immediate action." All special meetings are open to the public and press unless the Committee votes to go into executive session. All procedures and rules for the conduct of special meetings shall be the same as those used in regular meetings. **Policy References:** M.G.L. 30A: 18-25
